DWS Group hosts local high school graduates
Many graduating high school students lack a clear plan for their futures. Often torn between college or career, settling on the right path can be challenging. This conundrum can be especially stressful for students who otherwise lack ample opportunities to gain professional experience or the sort of mentoring helpful in plotting a professional course.
In response, this year, DWS is proudly celebrating its tenth year of participating in the “I Have a Dream” summer internship program, which provides tangible work experience in a corporate setting for talented, recent New York City high school graduates.
By partnering with select non-profit organizations, DWS offers rising college-bound students an opportunity to experience working within the asset management industry. Participating students spend the summer in a corporate environment and gain a better understanding of what it's like to work in the world of financial services. Through a balanced, but intensive, work and educational program, this summer’s visiting students, Mia Del Borrello and Jason Cherry, are working in the DWS New York office.
“This summer internship program reflects DWS Group’s commitment to diversity and inclusion while recognizing that initiatives like these are fundamental to our corporate values and critical to business success,” Sonelius Kendrick-Smith, Head of Liquidity Solutions - Americas and the program’s ambassador, said. “I am proud to be associated with the ‘I Have a Dream’ program because it provides me another avenue to effect change on the social and cultural dynamics at play in the financial industry.”
Mia graduated high school with honors, where she founded the LGBTQ+ Club and has been an active member in numerous organizations, such as Yung Feminists and the Newspaper Club. She also helped support her community volunteering with the YM&YWHA Teen Division. This fall, Mia will be attending Lawrence University and plans to major in pre-med with a minor in Business.
Jason graduated as a DaVinci Scholar, an accelerated math and science program. In high school, he played for the varsity football team and was the VP of the Gateway Institute for Pre-College Education. Jason also spent summers as a camp counselor at Incarnation Camp mentoring young boys. This fall, he will be attending Vanderbilt University and plans to major in Business Administration with a focus on Finance.
Alexander Bridgeforth, a portfolio manager for fixed income ETFs and another program ambassador, points out how for many of the students, it will be their first exposure to a corporate workplace. Experience gained today can be a catalyst for a meaningful career in financial services, which benefits companies like DWS, as well as the industry at large. Bridgeforth adds, the “Dreamers” have had more of an impact on him than he could have imagined.
We recently caught up with them to get a feel for how their summer at DWS is going.
What interested you in interning within the financial industry?
Mia: I am happy to be here this summer. I have always had an interest in finance but my previous experiences have been in other areas. So I thought this would be a great way to get finance experience and challenge myself.
Jason: I was interested in gaining work experience in a corporate office environment. I thought this internship would offer me a chance to get exposure to a finance company and the people who work there.
What are you hoping to learn through the program?
Jason: I’m hoping to learn about different areas of finance, like stock trading, and which areas interest me most. Also what all the different finance terms mean that I’ve read about and heard in my first week here so far.
Mia: Same for me. I’ve worked a lot with non-profits. I want to learn more about how finance works and the different career opportunities it provides. I’m excited to learn something new.
Any fun summer plans before heading to college?
Mia: I’m from Manhattan and want to spend time exploring all the boroughs in NYC I’ve never been to, like Brooklyn. I want to visit some museums and outdoor gardens with high school friends since this is our last summer together.
Jason: I’m heading to Panama in July. This will be my first missionary trip with my church. I’m looking forward to experiencing a different culture and food.
